Q&A 1: RULE OF THE ROAD

Question:
When acting as the officer of the watch your vessel is approaching an area of reduced visibility. What actions would you expect to take on the bridge?

Answer:
The changing visibility condition would generate the following actions:
a) Place the engines of the vessel on ‘stand by’ and reduce the ship’s speed.
b) Advised the master of the reduced visibility condition.
c) Post extra lookout on stations.
d) Commence sounding fog signals.
e) Carry out systematic plotting of any radar targets.
f) Switch on the navigational lights.
g) Engaged the vessel in manual steering.
h) Close all water tight doors.
i) Place a position on the chart.
j) Enter a statement of actions into the log book.
k) Stop all loud working on deck.

NB: The company standing orders would normally have a checklist procedure for entering poor visibility. This would be followed to include all of the above.
